Characteristics

Shrubby perennial herb to 3(–4) m. high with grey succulent glabrous stems and branches.. Leaves obovate, to 15 × 6 cm., base cuneate, apex rounded, margin entire, glaucous especially beneath, lower surface pilose with long (to 1.5 mm.) spreading hairs especially along the midrib, mature leaves rarely completely glabrous; petiole to 4 cm. long, pilose; stipules glandular.. Cymes in 3–5-branched umbels on peduncles to 12 cm. long produced from whorls of 5–10 leaves at the swollen apices of branches, with primary rays to 8 cm. long, forking twice; bracts subcircular, ± 1.5 cm. in diameter, the lower ones larger, subsessile to shortly petiolate, glabrous except for a few hairs along the lower margins.. Cyathia on peduncles to 1.5 mm. long, 3 × 7 mm., with funnel-shaped involucres; glands 4, or 5 on the central cyathium of the umbel, spreading, transversely elliptic, ± 3 mm. broad, outer margin 2–4-lobed, with each lobe sometimes shortly divided; involucral lobes broadly rounded, ± 1 × 1.5 mm.. Male flowers: bracteoles few, strap-shaped, upper margin ciliate and sometimes deeply divided; stamens 4.5–5 mm. long.. Female flower: styles 2.5 mm. long, joined for 0.5 mm., suberect with spreading shortly bifid apices.. Capsule exserted on a pedicel to 8 mm. long, deeply 3-lobed with a slighdy sunken apex, 8 × 10 mm..
