Characteristics

Dioecious, much-branched, spiny, glabrous succulent, up 0.2-1 m tall, branches cylindrical, 15-30 mm diam., with obscure tubercles arranged in 6-8 angles, covered with stout, thorny, simple, persistent peduncles and short-shoots, 8-60 mm long. Leaves soon deciduous, 1-2 mm long. Cyathia many around apex of each branch, each on a later woody, persistent peduncle in axil of tubercle, 3-5 mm diam., with 5 entire green to red glands. Capsule sessile, 4-5 mm diam., glabrous.

Glabrous, usually densely clump-forming, low to tall shrub, 0.2-1.0 m high and 0.3-1.0 m wide, branches 20-40 mm thick, clavate, 7-10-angled, green to grey-green, with sharp spines 6-40 mm long. Leaf-rudiments 1-2 x 1 mm, lanceolate. Cyathia on ± glabrous peduncle 10-25 mm long, 2.5-6.0 mm in diam.; glands 5, green, entire. Flowering time Aug.-Nov. Capsule 4-6 mm in diam., ± spherical, glabrous.
