Characteristics

Succulent perennial densely branching from the base forming tangled masses ± 25 cm. high and 1 m. in diameter; branches decumbent to ± 50 cm. long, sparsely rebranched, sharply 4-angled, to ± 1 cm. thick, uniformly bright green; angles ± without teeth.. Spinescence brown, the spine-pairs 5–15 mm. apart; spine-shields oblong-triangular, to 2–3 × 2 mm. above the spines, decurrent to 8 mm. and about halfway to 2 mm. above the flowering eye below; spines and prickles very slender, subequal in length or the prickles slightly longer, to 5 mm. long, spreading to form an ×.. Leaves deltoid, ± 1 × 1 mm.. Cymes solitary, 1-forked, with peduncles ± 2 mm. long; bracts ovate, ± 1.75 × 1.5 mm.. Cyathia ± 3 × 5 mm., with funnel-shaped involucres; glands transversely rectangular, ± 1.2 × 2.7 mm., contiguous, pinkish yellow; lobes transversely elliptic, 1 × 1.5 mm. red.. Male flowers: bracteoles fan-shaped, dentate; mature stamens not seen.. Female flower: ovary sessile; styles 4 mm. long, joined at the base, apices thickened.. Capsule and seeds not seen.

Spine shields 5–9 × 1.25–2 mm, decurrent and narrowing slightly but not reaching the flowering eye below, whitish-buff; spines slender, to 4 mm, occasionally obsolescent, widely diverging, usually deflexed; prickles usually slightly longer than the spines, to 5 mm long, c. 2 mm above the spines, divergent to form an X with the spines.

Cymes solitary, simple; peduncles to 2.5 mm long, cyme branches to 3 mm long; bracts to 2.25 mm long, ovate, subacute.
Female flower: styles c. 3.5 mm long, free to the base, stigmas spreading, rugulose.
Male flowers 10: bracteoles c. 3 mm long, filiform; stamens c. 5 mm long.
Leaves c. 2 mm long, ovate-acute, caducous.
