Characteristics

Branches 4(5)-angled, c. 1.25 cm wide, deeply furrowed between the angles, shallowly and irregularly constricted into short segments; angles with rounded tubercles 7–12 mm apart along the margins.

Spine shields obovate, forming a ± continuous horny margin along the angles, 1–3 mm wide; spines 4–7 mm long, widely diverging; prickles minute, usually ± hooked, sometimes absent.
Cyathia with cup-shaped involucres, 2–2.5 × 3.5–4 mm; glands transversely oblong, 1.75–2.2 mm wide, touching, yellow to reddish; lobes 1 × 1 mm, broadly elliptic, fimbriate.
Cymes solitary, simple; peduncle 0.75 mm long, 2.5 mm in diameter, with cyme branches stout, c. 2 mm long; bracts c. 2 mm long, subquadrate.
Female flower: styles 0.75–1.2 mm long, free almost to the base, with spreading shortly bifid apices.
Male flowers numerous: bracteoles 2.5 mm long, deeply fimbriate; stamens c. 3.75 mm long.
Capsule deeply lobed, c. 3 × 4.5 mm, exserted on a curved reflexed pedicel c. 5 mm long.
Seeds subglobose, 1.75–2 mm long, smooth, yellow-brown, often faintly reticulated.
Spiny succulent densely branched and rebranched shrublet c. 15 cm high.
