Perennial shrub, with a fleshy tuberous root to 30 cm. long, producing numerous erect woody stems and branches to 1 m. high, puberulous when young.. Leaves sessile, oblanceolate, to 25 × 6 mm., base cuneate, apex rounded to minutely apiculate, lamina glabrous except for a few hairs at the base; glandular stipules minute, pointed.. Cymes axillary, reduced to a solitary subsessile cyathium surrounded by several pubescent obovate bracts ± 3 × 2 mm.. Cyathia ± 3 × 5 mm., with pubescent cup-shaped involucres; glands 5, the sides inrolled to form an erect tube open on the inner side, transversely elliptic, ± 1.5 × 2 mm. when opened out; lobes transversely rectangular, ± 1.3 × 2 mm., margin fringed.. Male flowers many: bracteoles deeply laciniate and feathery; stamens 4 mm. long, with pedicels pubescent at the apex.. Female flower: ovary subsessile, densely pubescent; styles 1.5 mm. long, joined to ± halfway, with spreading thickened rugulose apices.. Capsule obtusely 3-lobed, pubescent, ± 4 × 5.5 mm.. Seeds globose, 2.5 mm. in diameter, smooth, grey.
