Characteristics

Annual herb to 60 cm. high, glabrous except for short curved adpressed hairs on young growth.. Leaves broadly ovate to 4.5 × 2.5 cm., base cuneate, apex acute, margin closely serrate with small glandular teeth, midrib prominent to winged on the lower surface; petiole to 2 cm. long, somewhat flattened; glandular stipules purplish.. Cymes axillary and in terminal 3-branched umbels, with primary rays to 9 cm. long; bracts similar to the leaves.. Cyathia subsessile, 2.5 × 3.5 mm., with cup-shaped shortly pubescent involucres; glands 4, transversely elliptic, 1 × 1.75 mm., dull yellow; lobes subquadrate, 1 mm. long, margin ciliate.. Male flowers: bracteoles fan-shaped, with ciliate apices; stamens 2.5 mm. long.. Female flower: ovary densely puberulous; styles 0.5 mm. long, spreading, joined at the base, shortly bifid.. Capsule shortly exserted on a puberulous pedicel 2 mm. long, subglobose, with shallow longitudinal grooves along the sutures, base truncate, 5 × 5.5 mm., puberulous with short adpressed hairs.. Seeds ovoid, very obscurely 4-angled, 3.25 × 2.25 mm., apex obtuse, smooth, shiny black, with a white granular patch below the apex.
