Characteristics

Glabrous, loosely to densely clump-forming shrub, 0.15-0.30 m high, branches 12-40 mm thick, clavate, 7-10-angled, bright green becoming brown below, with often whorl-like bands of sharp spines 4-20 mm long. Leaf-rudiments 3-6 x 1-2 mm, narrowly subulate. Cyathia on finely pubescent peduncle 3-10 mm long, 3.5-5.0 in mm in diam.; glands 5, deep to yellow green, entire. Flowering time May-Oct. Capsule 4-7 mm in diam., ± spherical, glabrous.
