Hysteranthous geophyte, with branched rhizomes to 4 cm. thick and ± 15 cm. long; stems erect, below ground, ± 5 cm. high, with horizontally spreading branches and a dark roughened surface.. Leaves glabrous, sessile, crowded and spreading in a rosette at soil level from the stem apex, oblanceolate to obovate to 8.5 × 3.2–4 cm., base cuneate, apex obtuse, mucronate, margin entire or minutely crisped, ± fleshy, green streaked with red.. Cymes produced before the leaves, simple or sparsely branched, with peduncles 3.3–3.7 cm. long; bracts sessile, deltoid, 3.2–3.5 mm. long.. Cyathia sessile, ± 3.5 × 5.2 mm., with cup-shaped involucres; glands transversely elliptic, ± 0.5 × 1.5 mm., contiguous, brownish; lobes 2.2 mm. wide, deeply dentate.. Male flowers: bracteoles spathulate, deeply laciniate; stamens ± 4.2 mm. long.. Female flower: styles ± 1.9 mm. long, joined at the base, apices thickened.. Capsule exserted on a recurved pedicel to 1 cm. long, obtusely 3-lobed, ± 3.3 × 4.2 mm.. Seeds not seen.
