Characteristics

Shrubby or semi-prostrate succulent perennial 25–100 cm. high with branching stems sometimes trailing; branches 4–5-angled, 1–1.5 cm. thick; angles shallowly to prominently toothed, with rounded teeth 1–1.5 cm. apart.. Spine-shields triangular or oblong-triangular, to 3 × 3 mm. above the spines, decurrent to 5(–8) mm. and 1/2–3/4 towards the flowering eye below; spines to 8 mm. long; prickles 1–2 mm. long.. Leaves deltoid, ± 1 × 1 mm.. Cymes solitary, 1-forked, with peduncles 0.5–1.5 mm. long; bracts subquadrate, ± 1.4 × 1.4 mm.. Cyathia to ± 2.5 × 5 mm., with funnel-shaped involucres; glands transversely rectangular, to 1.25 × 2.5 mm., contiguous; lobes transversely elliptic, to 1 × 1.5 mm.. Male flowers: bracteoles fan-shaped, dentate, stamens 3 mm. long.. Female flower: styles 2–2.2 mm. long, joined at the base, apices thickened.. Capsule sessile, obtusely 3-lobed, ± 2.5 × 4 mm.. Seeds ovoid, 1.8 × 1.5 mm., brown, shallowly tuberculate.
