Characteristics

Leaves spreading to reflexed, with a pubescent petiole 1–2 mm long; stipules glandular, minute; lamina to 23 × 5 mm and lanceolate on sterile branches, or to 30 × 10 mm and ovate-lanceolate on flowering branches, acute at the apex, rounded at the base, very narrowly cartilaginous and serrulate at the margin, usually revolute, glabrous except for a few hairs at the base, midrib prominent beneath.

Perennial herb with 1–2 woody underground stems from a tuberous rootstock; rootstock 3–4 cm in diameter, subspherical; stems c. 7 cm long, branching at ground level; branches several, rebranching only at the base, shortly erect to 15 cm high or decumbent to 35 cm long, pubescent.
Cyathia sessile, c. 4 × 7 mm, with funnel-shaped pubescent involucres; glands 5, spreading, c. 3.5 × 1.8 mm, transversely elliptic with obscurely crenulate margins; lobes 2 × 2 mm, rounded, finely toothed at the margin with the central tooth extended to 1 mm long, ciliate.
Capsule scarcely exserted on a pubescent pedicel c. 3 mm long, 7 × 8 mm, subspherical, densely papillose-pubescent, purplish-brown.
Cymes in terminal 3–5-branched umbels with rays to 6 cm long, not forking, or cyathia occasionally solitary.
Female flower: ovary densely pubescent; styles 2.5 mm long, joined to halfway, with spreading bifid apices.
Bracts 4 or 5, subsessile, to 25 × 15 mm, ovate, apex acute, base subcordate.
Male flowers: bracteoles fan-shaped, deeply laciniate; stamens 5 mm long.
Seeds 4 × 2.8 mm, ovoid-oblong, with obtuse apex, smooth, purplish-brown.
