Characteristics

Spiny, glabrous, much-branched shrub, 1-3 m high, with stem up to 150 mm thick, branches 20-40 mm thick, cylindrical, 5-7-angled, pale to deep green becoming grey below, with simple woody persistent spikes 6-20 mm long. Leaf-rudiments 3-10 x 1.0-1.5 mm, linear. Cyathia 1-4 on ± glabrous, branched, deciduous peduncle 15-30 mm long, 3.0-4.5 mm in diam., with 2 or 3 bracts 3-5 mm long under each cyathium; glands 5, green, entire. Flowering time Nov., Dec.(-Apr.). Capsule 4-6 mm in diam., obtusely 3-angled, glabrous.

Erecto-decumbens: dodrantalis: spinis subsemuncialibus. Caudex adhuc pentagonus, diametro semunciali, superne glaucescens, sulcis validis, et concinne lineola exarata impressis. Spinae adhuc trilineares ultraque. Obs. Caudices in horto caldario, decumbentes at grossi, apicibus assurgentibus, spinis citius marcescentibus; et postea decidentibus affinium more. Flores affinium, sed perfectos non examinavi.
