Characteristics

Spine shields 6–9 × 3–4 mm, obovate, decurrent to shortly above the flowering eye below; spines sturdy, variable in length, to 5–7 mm long; prickles to 1 mm long and 2 mm above the spines.

Cyathia 2–2.5 × 4 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; glands c. 2–2.5 × 1.25 mm, transversely oblong, touching, yellow; lobes c. 1.25 × 1.25 mm, rounded, denticulate, red.
Branches acutely 4-angled, 10–15 mm in diameter; angles sinuate with prominent tubercles 10–15 mm apart along the margins.
Female flower: styles 2.5 mm long, free almost to the base, spreading, apices shortly bifid.
Spiny succulent shrublet, erect to 75 cm tall, or with branches semi-prostrate to 1 m long.
Male flowers 10–15: bracteoles c. 1.5 mm long, filiform; stamens c. 3.5 mm long.
Cymes solitary, simple, subsessile; bracts c. 1.25–1.75 × 1.25 mm, dentate.
Capsule c. 2.5 × 3.75 mm, obtusely lobed, reddish-brown.
Seeds c. 1.5 × 1.25 mm, ovoid, lightly verrucose.
