Characteristics

Sparingly branched annual herb to 30 cm. high, stem slightly swollen at the base and semi-succulent to 1 cm. thick, the whole plant ± sparsely pilose, with spreading white hairs to 1 mm. long, glabrescent at maturity.. Leaves ovate-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, to 8 × 1 cm., base cuneate, apex rounded, margin entire, midrib prominent on the lower surface; petiole to 1 cm. long; stipules absent or glandular and rudimentary.. Cymes axillary and in terminal 3-branched umbels, with primary rays to 6 cm. long; bracts similar to the leaves.. Cyathia on peduncles 1 mm. long, 2.2 × 2.5 mm., with cup-shaped involucres, sparsely pilose; glands 4, spreading, subcircular, 1 mm. wide, bright reddish green; lobes subquadrate, 1 mm. long, margin toothed, ciliate.. Male flowers: bracteoles linear, deeply toothed, ciliate; stamens 2 mm. long.. Female flower: ovary pilose; styles 1.4 mm. long, joined at the base, bifid to halfway.. Capsule exserted on a reflexed pilose pedicel 6.5 mm. long, oblong-trigonous, 4.8 × 4 mm., sparsely pilose.. Seeds oblong, obscurely 4-angled, 4 × 2 mm., greyish brown, lightly wrinkled, with a yellow caruncle 1.6 mm. wide.
