Characteristics

Branches numerous, rebranching near the base, to 22 cm long and 3–5 mm in diameter, flexuose, 3-angled; angles sinuate-dentate; tubercles 2–4.5 cm apart and 2.5 mm high along the margins, spirally arranged, sharply or obliquely truncate at the apex.

Spine shields to 2.2 mm, triangular, formed by the expanded bases of the spines which sometimes remain separated below the leaf scar; spines 2.5–5 mm long, widely divergent; prickles minute.
Spiny succulent dwarf perennial, from a flattish irregularly-shaped woody tuber to c. 30 cm in diameter and c. 5 cm thick.
Cyathia c. 4 × 5 mm, with funnel-shaped involucres; glands 1.5 × 3 mm, ovate, touching; lobes c. 2 × 2 mm, broadly ovate.
Female flower (immature): pedicel 1.75 mm long; styles 2–2.5 mm long, free almost to the base, apices shortly bifid.
Leaves 15–25(55) × 5–15 mm, narrowly obovate, narrowing into a petiole-like base, fleshy, persistent.
Cymes solitary, simple; peduncle and cyme branches 1 mm long; bracts c. 3 × 2.5 mm, oblong.
Male flowers c. 20: bracteoles c. 2.5 mm long, filiform; stamens c. 5 mm long.
Capsule and seeds not seen.
