Characteristics

Spine shields 3–6 × 1.5–2 mm, obovate, decurrent from halfway to almost touching the flowering eye below, red-brown; spines and prickles equal in length, 3–4 mm long, very slender, blackish, divergent to form an X, with prickles 1–1.5 mm above the spines.

Branches sparsely rebranched, to 8–25 cm long, c. 5 mm in diameter, obtusely 4-angled; angles shallowly sinuate with tubercles 5–10 mm apart along the margins.
Cyathia c. 2 × 3 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; glands 1.25 × 0.75 mm, elliptic, separate; lobes 0.75 × 0.5 mm, rounded, denticulate.
Spiny succulent shrublet, procumbent to 15 cm high or suberect to c. 50 cm tall, branching from a thickened root.
Cymes solitary, simple, red; cyme branches 1 mm long; bracts 1 × 0.75 mm, oblong.
Male flowers: bracteoles 1.75 mm long, laciniate; stamens immature.
Female flowers: capsules and seeds not seen.
