Characteristics

Glabrous shrub 1–2 m. high with ± woody branches.. Leaves subsessile to petiolate, obovate to lanceolate, to 30 × 5.5 cm., base cuneate, apex minutely to shortly apiculate, margin entire; lamina tapering into a petiole to 2.5 cm. long on older larger leaves; stipules apparently absent.. Cymes in terminal 2–3-branched umbels on leafless peduncles to 10 cm. long, with primary rays to 6 cm. long, forking 2–4 times; bracts deltoid, ± 2.5 × 2.5 cm. when mature, base subcordate, apex acuminate to ± 2 cm. long; bracts below the umbel a little larger.. Cyathia on peduncles to 3 mm. long, ± 10 × 30 mm., with barrel-shaped involucres; glands 4, spreading, transversely oblong, ± 2 mm. × 8 mm., outer margin lobed with 8–12 finger-like processes ± 7 mm. long branching 1–2 times at the tips and terminating in minute knobs; involucral lobes rounded, ± 3 × 5 mm., the margin deeply toothed and minutely ciliate.. Male flowers: bracteoles few, ligulate, apex ciliate; stamens many, 14 mm. long, minutely puberulous.. Female flower: perianth obvious below the ovary, 1.5–2 mm. wide, with sharply toothed margin; styles 5 mm. long, joined at the base with thickened shortly bifid apices.. Capsule exserted on a curved pedicel to 1 cm. long, subglobose, ± 9 mm. in diameter.. Seeds ovoid-trigonous, 6 × 4.5 mm., smooth, greyish brown.
