Characteristics

Cyathia with involucres 1.75–2.75 × 3.5–5.25 mm, broadly funnel-shaped; glands 1.5–2.75 mm wide, transversely oblong, touching, greenish-yellow; lobes 1.5 × 2 mm, broadly cuneate, fimbriate.

Spine shields obovate, forming a continuous horny margin along the angles c. 1.5 mm wide; spines stout, 5–8 mm long, spreading; prickles minute or absent, c. 2 mm above the spines.
Branches rigid, up to 17 cm long, 4-angled, 10–20 mm in diameter; angles with prominent tubercles to 2.5 mm high, 8–12 mm apart along the margins.
Male flowers 25: bracteoles c. 2.5 mm long, filiform-fimbriate; stamens c. 4 mm long, reddish, with purplish anther cells.
Cymes solitary, simple; peduncles to 3 mm long, cyme branches 1.75–4.5 mm long; bracts 1.5 mm long, ovate, denticulate.
Female flower: styles 1–1.2 mm long, free nearly to the base, purplish, with yellowish capitate apices.
Capsule c. 3.25 × 3 mm, obtusely lobed, angles and sutures purplish; pedicel c. 1.5 mm long.
Seeds c. 1.75 × 1.2 mm, ellipsoid, conspicuously verrucose, greyish-brown.
Spiny succulent shrublet to 15–40 cm high, densely branched.
