Characteristics

Succulent shrub or dwarf shrub, 0.15-0.50 m high; spineless, unisexual, branching from base or higher up. Branches opposite, spreading, fibrous, tough, terete or slightly 6-angled, glabrous or with blunt, minute papillae; primary branches 2-6 mm wide. Leaves opposite, rudimentary, blade rhomboid or deltoid-hastate, 1-2 mm long, with minute, spreading point on each side at base, blackish brown, soon deciduous. Flowers: solitary or in racemes on lateral branchlets, occasional terminal ones; bracts soon deciduous; involucral glands 5 with 5 toothed fringes, yellowish green or dark purple; Oct.-Apr.

Leaves soon deciduous, sessile, deltoid, usually with 2 spreading basal horns. Cyathia many, in cymes terminating some branches, sessile, 1-3 per cyme, 2-2.5 mm diam., often pubescent outside near base, with 4 or 5 yellow-green glands. Capsule slightly exserted on erect pedicel, 3-4.5 mm diam., sometimes pubescent.

Like E. tenax but stems stouter, often becoming rigid and slightly spiny near tips.
