Characteristics

Cyathia c. 2.5 × 4–4.5 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; glands c. 2 mm wide, oblong, closely touching; lobes c. 1.5 × 1.5 mm, fimbriate.

Branches 4–5-angled, 1–2 cm wide; angles winged, prominently sinuate, with tubercles 4–5 mm high and 8–15 mm apart along the margins.
Spine shields to 5–12 × 2.5–3 mm, ovate, decurrent but seldom joined; spines stout, 3–10 mm long, spreading; prickles rudimentary.
Capsule 3–3.5 × 4.5 × 5 mm, obtusely lobed, base truncate, exserted on a recurved pedicel c. 10 mm long.
Female flower: styles c. 1.5 mm long, free almost to the base, with widely spreading apices.
Cymes solitary, simple, subsessile, entirely dark purplish; bracts c. 2.25 × 1.5 mm, ovate.
Spiny succulent densely branching shrublets to c. 15 cm high, or shrubs to 1.25 m high.
Male flowers c. 20: bracteoles filiform, c. 2 mm long; stamens c. 3 mm long.
Leaves c. 2.5–10 mm long, ovate, quickly deciduous.
Seeds c. 2.25 mm in diameter, broadly ovoid, brown.
