Leaves deflexed, with a puberulous petiole to 1 cm long; stipules glandular, purplish; lamina to 12 × 1.3 cm, narrowly lanceolate, obtuse at the apex and apiculate, rounded at the base, entire revolute at the margin, midrib prominent on the lower surface which is sparsely pubescent.
Cyathia sessile, 4 × 5.5 mm, with shortly puberulous purplish-red broadly cup-shaped involucres; glands 4, c. 4 mm wide, transversely elliptic, spreading, dark red; lobes 2 mm long, subquadrate with margins deeply toothed and ciliate.
Capsule exserted on a curved pedicel, 5 mm in diameter, subglobose, very densely papillose-pilose, purplish-red; pedicel densely pilose, 6 mm long.
Female flower: ovary densely pilose; styles 3 mm long, sparsely puberulous below, joined to halfway with bifid apices.
Perennial herb, with a woody tuberous rootstock, producing a few shortly puberulous annual stems to 45 cm high.
Male flowers: bracteoles laciniate with feathery apices; stamens 5.5 mm long, puberulous.
Cymes in 3-branched umbels, with primary rays to 12 cm long, each forking twice.
Seeds 4 × 2.5 mm, ovoid, closely warted, greyish-brown.
Bracts similar to the leaves.
