Characteristics

Cyathia with involucres c. 3 × 5 mm; glands transversely oblong, c. 2 mm wide, touching, dark red, conspicuously rugose; lobes c. 1 × 2 mm, broadly fan-shaped, irregularly fimbriate.

Branches ascending, rarely rebranching, (3)4(5)-angled, 10–15 mm in diameter, irregularly constricted; angles sinuate, with tubercles 1–2 cm apart along the margins.
Spiny succulent shrub to 40 cm high, branching freely from the base to form dense clumps to 1 m in diameter.
Female flower: styles c. 2.5 mm long, united to halfway, apices spreading-recurved, shortly bifid.
Capsule c. 3.5 × 5 mm, obtusely triangular, red, far exserted on a recurved pedicel 8 mm long.
Spine shields 5–9 × 3 mm, ovate; spines stout, 4–6 mm long, divergent; prickles minute.
Male flowers 25–30: bracteoles laciniate, c. 2.25 mm long; stamens to 5 mm long.
Cymes solitary, simple or reduced to a single cyathium, dark red, subsessile.
Seeds c. 2 mm in diameter, ± globose, smooth, grey, sometimes brown spotted.
Leaves c. 1 mm long, broadly deltoid, recurved, deciduous.
