Characteristics

Monoecious, single-stemmed, spineless, glabrous succulent to 50 cm, stem 30-75 mm diam., cylindrical, covered with spirally arranged, conical tubercles, to 12 mm long, bearing slender, sterile short shoots in axils persisting as woody spines. Leaves soon deciduous, linear-lanceolate, 10-25 × 1-4 mm. Cyathia many around stem apex, each on short, non-persistent peduncle to 25 mm long in axil of tubercle and between sterile short shoot and stem, 6-7 mm diam., with 4 or 5 ± smooth, green glands. Capsule sessile on short, erect pedicel, ± 7 mm diam., glabrous.

Like E. fasciculata but up to 500 mm tall, cyathia usually solitary on short peduncles which do not persist as woody spines, short shoots slender and sterile, arising in same axil as peduncle but on side away from stem and persisting as a woody spine, capsules not exserted on decurved pedicel.
