Characteristics

Cyathia c. 3 × 4.5 mm, with funnel-shaped involucres; glands 0.75–1 × 2–2.5 mm, transversely oblong, touching, orange-red with darker margins; lobes c. 1.3 × 1 mm, broadly cuneate, bright maroon-red.

Branches sharply 4(5)-angled, 1–1.5 cm in diameter, blue-green, conspicuously darker striped along the angles; angles sinuate with tubercles c. 4 mm high and 10–12 mm apart along the margins.
Spine shields 6–15 mm long, decurrent almost to the flowering eye below; spines 5–8 mm long; prickles to 1 mm long, c. 2 mm above the spines.
Male flowers 15, far exserted: bracteoles filiform, c. 2.5 mm long; stamens c. 5.25 mm long, anther cells bright maroon.
Spiny succulent stout shrublet c. 30–90 cm high, sparingly branched from a main stem 2–2.5 cm in diameter at the base.
Female flower: styles c. 2 mm long, free almost to the base, bright maroon with yellowish capitate stigmas.
Cymes solitary, simple, subsessile; cyme branches c. 1 mm long; bracts 1.25–1.75 × 1–1.5 mm, purplish.
Capsule c. 3.5 × 4.5 mm, obtusely lobed, subsessile.
Seeds c. 1.9 × 1.4 mm, ellipsoid, densely verrucose.
Leaves 1 × 1 mm, deltoid, deciduous.
