Characteristics

Dwarf, glabrous succulent, 20-150 mm high, with clavate subterranean stem and spreading to ascending rosette of 2-5-angled branches above ground; branches 15-150 x 8-15 mm, sometimes slightly concave above and convex below, often tapering-cylindrical towards base; spine shields separate, spines 2-4 mm long. Leaf-rudiments 1-2 x 1.0-1.5 mm. Cyathia transversely disposed in single cyme per tubercle, on peduncle 1-2 mm long, 2.5-4.5 mm in diam.; glands 5, entire, red to deep green. Flowering time Nov., Dec. Capsule 5 mm in diam., sharply 3-angled, glabrous, exserted for 4-5 mm.
