Characteristics

Spiny, glabrous, densely branched shrub, 0.3-1.0 m high, branches 30-100 mm thick, cylindrical, 8-18-angled, grey-green, with rigid short-shoots 4-20 mm long with rosette of 3-6 spreading spines 4-20 mm long at apex. Leaf-rudiments 3-10 x 1-3 mm, narrowly lanceolate. Cyathia 1 on finely pubescent, persistent peduncle 4-20 mm long, with rosette of 3-6 sterile spines in axils of bracts immediately below it, 3.5-5.0 mm in diam.; glands 5, deep green to purple, entire. Flowering time July-Oct. Capsule 5-7 mm in diam., ± spherical, finely pubescent.

Dioecious, much-branched, spiny, glabrous succulent, up to 0.7 x 0.7 m, branches cylindrical-clavate, 30-80 mm diam., with obscure tubercles fused into 10-16 low angles and many stout persistent and later spiny peduncles 4-20 mm long, each branching subapically into 3-5, spreading, rigid, sterile spinelets 4-10 mm long. Leaves soon deciduous, 3-10 mm long. Cyathia many around apex of each branch, each on a peduncle 5-20 mm long in axil of tubercle, 3.5-5 mm diam., with 5 entire green to reddish glands. Capsule sessile, 5-7 mm diam., glabrous.
