Characteristics

Branches suberect, acutely 4-angled, 6–10 mm in diameter, dull green, darker striped along the angles; angles sinuate with tubercles 2–2.5 mm high and c. 14 mm apart along the margins.

Spine shields c. 9 × 1.5 mm, obovate, decurrent to ± halfway to the flowering eye below; spines 4–5 mm long, blackish; prickles 1–2(2.5) mm long, c. 2 mm above the spines.
Cyathia c. 3 × 3.5–4 mm with funnel-shaped involucres; glands 2–2.5 × 1 mm, transversely elliptic, just touching, deep orange; lobes c. 1 × 1.5 mm, transversely elliptic.
Spiny succulent shrublet to 15 cm high, densely tufted from the base, sparingly branched above, forming loose cushions.
Male flowers 7–8, far exserted: bracteoles c. 2 mm long, laciniate; stamens c. 5 mm long, anther cells maroon.
Cymes solitary, simple; peduncle and cyme branches c. 1.5 mm long; bracts c. 2 × 1–1.25 mm, oblong.
Female flower: styles c. 3 mm long, united for 1 mm, spreading recurved with bifid tips.
Seed c. 1.7–2.2 × 1.2–1.7 mm, ellipsoid, brownish, lightly verrucose.
Capsule c. 3.5 × 4.5 mm, obtusely lobed, sessile.
