Characteristics

Perennial shrubby herb to 3 m. high, woody at the base; branches in whorls of 5, glabrous or very sparsely pilose, often tinged red.. Leaves subsessile, lanceolate, to 11 × 3 cm., base tapering into a very short flattened petiole, apex acute to shortly apiculate, margin entire, petiole and lower surface of the leaf pilose with long, soft hairs, especially the midrib and sometimes the upper surface of young leaves.. Cymes in terminal 5-branched umbels, with primary rays to 7 cm. long, forking usually twice; bracts sessile, deltoid, to 2 × 2 cm., apex obtuse to rounded and minutely apiculate, base and lower margins sparsely pilose.. Central cyathium of the umbel on a peduncle 1.5 mm. long, the rest sessile, 3 × 3.8 mm., with funnel-shaped involucres, glabrous; glands 4–5, transversely oblong, and ± 2-lipped, ± 1.5 mm. broad, yellow-green; involucral lobes subquadrate, 1 mm. long, apex shallowly bilobed, ciliate on the inner surface.. Male flowers: bracteoles spathulate, deeply toothed, densely ciliate; stamens 4 mm. long..
