Species

Angiosperms > Cucurbitales > Cucurbitaceae > Eureiandra

Characteristics

Climber to 1 m.; rootstock tuberous, ± 150 mm. in diameter, ± 100 mm. below ground; young stems herbaceous, shortly and finely pubescent; old basal stems arising from the tuber gnarled and thickened, with pale papery bark.. Leaf-blade bright olive-green above, paler beneath, broadly ovate-cordate or triangular-cordate in outline, pubescent beneath and on nerves above with short curved subappressed hairs, 24–115 mm. long, 14–100 mm. broad, palmately 3(–5)-lobed or rarely unlobed; lobes lanceolate to elliptic, narrowed below, apiculate, entire or slightly undulate or distinctly sinuate-toothed; petiole pubescent, 7–28 mm. long.. Flowers very variable in size and often appearing when the stems are almost leafless.. Male flowers 1–6 together, on 10–55 mm. long hairy pedicels; receptacle-tube pale green, narrowly campanulate below, abruptly expanded at the apex into a horizontal rim up to 1.5 mm. wide, 2.5–7 mm. long; lobes lanceolate, 3–11 mm. long; petals pale creamy-or apricot-yellow, obovate, apiculate, 18–32 mm. long, 14–20 mm. broad; stamens 5 or 3; connectives broad; thecae convoluted.. Female flowers on 4–10 mm. long stalks; ovary cylindrical-ellipsoid, beaked, pubescent, 6–13.5 mm. long, 0.5–1 mm. across; receptacle-tube slightly hairy, 1.5–5 mm. long; lobes lanceolate or lanceolate-subulate, 3–4.5 mm. long; petals elliptic, 24–30 mm. long, 11–18 mm. broad; staminodes 5, inserted near apex of tube.. Fruit on a 13–20 mm. long stalk, ellipsoid and beaked, 57–62 mm. long, 24–25 mm. across.. Seeds subglobose, slightly asymmetrical in outline, distinctly margined, 6.5–7 × 6.5 × 4.5–5 mm.. Fig. 4.
