Characteristics

A perennial herb with annual stems from a thick and lignified subterranean caudex; roots numerous from the base, fibrous; stems simple or little-branched, erect, 2-25 cm high, closely leafy, glabrous or with a lax tomentum in the leaf-axils. Leaves imbricated, erect-spreading, 0.5-2 cm long, pinnately lobed or sometimes 3-forked-entire, rigid and coriaceous-cartilaginous, glabrous or laxly arachnose-tomentose in the axils and along the basal margins, green or greyish green-glaucous; rachis linear or lanceolate-narrowly ovate, 0.5-5 mm wide, with 1-12 distinct, prominent nerves on the abaxial side; leaf-lobes in 1-8 pairs, subulate-setiform, rigid, straight or curved, 0.5-10 mm long. Peduncles terminal at the branch tips and ramification points, solitary, erect, 6-25 cm long, glabrous, terete, smooth or striate-sulcate. Involucre hemispherical or broadly campanulate, 6-12 mm in diam., glabrous. Involucral bracts 10-16, uniseriate, connate to 1/3-2/3, faintly-distinctly 3-veined; the free lobes deltoid-ovate-lanceolate, 1-5 mm long, puberulous-tipped, acute-acuminate. Receptacle convex, shallowly alveolate. Ray-florets 8-15, yellow. Tube 0.5-2 mm long, cylindrical or basally inflated. Lamina elliptic-oblong-(narrowly) oblong, 3-11 mm long, (0.5-)1-3.5 mm wide, 4-10-veined. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.4-0.8 mm long, obtuse-truncate. Staminodes sometimes present, filiform. Disc-florets c. 40-100. Corolla 2.5-4 mm long. Tube 0.5-1.5 mm long, cylindrical or subcorneal with inflated base. Limb campanulate, 2-3 mm long; lobes deltoid or (narrowly) ovate, 0.5-1 mm long. Anthers 1-1.8 mm long incl. the ovate or ovate-oblong, obtuse-subacute appendage. Style fertile or seldom sterile, terete or flattened with swollen base; stylophore short, ±indistinct; style branches 0.1-0.5 mm long, truncate. Pappus bristles few, 0.2-1.5 mm long, flexuous, white. Achenes oblong-obovate-elliptic-oblong, 2-4 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, light or yellowish brown, white-puberulous, with c. 10 distinct ribs.
