Characteristics

Perennial herb, 20-250 mm high; with lignified, subterranean caudex. Leaves alternate, sessile, imbricate, densely set; blade pinnatifid with usually 4-8 pairs of lobes, 5-20 mm long, lobes subulate to setiform, glaucous or greyish green; rachis 2-5 mm wide near base, (5-)8-12-nerved, rigid and coriaceous, glabrous or hairy in leaf axils. Heads radiate; peduncles solitary, terminal, up to 250 mm long. Involucral bracts uniseriate, 10-16, connate to middle or more, 3-veined, ecalyculate. Flowers: ray florets 8-15, blade 3-7 mm long, female, fertile; disc florets 40-100, corolla 2.5-4.0 mm long, bisexual; all florets yellow; Nov., Dec. Fruit with cypsela oblong-obovate to elliptic-oblong, puberulous, hairs white or brown, with ± 10 ribs. Pappus of few barbellate bristles, soon caducous.
