Perennials, rhizomatous. Flowering culms 25–130 cm high. Leaf blades linear, folded or becoming flat, 9–40 cm long, 4–20 mm wide, acute or obtuse. Inflorescences bearing bisexual and sterile spikelets (underdeveloped at the apex); branches 15–45, 7–17 cm long, apically bare. Bisexual spikelets subsessile, slightly laterally compressed, with 2–3 florets; glumes unequal, scabrous; lower glume lanceolate, 1.2–1.8 mm long; upper glume oblong to elliptic, 1.8–2.5 mm long, aristulate; basal lemma 2.2–2.7 mm long, with awnlet 0.2–0.6 mm long, with silky hairs to 1.6 mm long, dark brown in fruit; palea oblanceolate, with keels ciliolate. Caryopsis elliptic to obovate, 0.9–1.3 mm long, 0.4–0.6 mm wide. Incomplete floret(s) underdeveloped, muticous, truncate, inflated.
