Characteristics

Stem simple or with 1 branch at the base, 4-10 in. high, villous with jointed hairs, but not densely; leaves in 2-6 pairs, erect or slightly spreading; petiole 1-4 lin. long; blade 1-2 1/3 in. long, 1/6-1 in. broad, usually the lowest ovate, the middle pairs lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate and the uppermost linear, or occasionally all ovate or oblong-lanceolate, acute to obtuse, rounded or more rarely subcordate at the base, villous with jointed hairs on both sides, shortly ciliate; umbels solitary or a pair at the apex of the stem, pedunculate, 4-6-(rarely up to 10-) flowered; peduncles 3/4-2 1/3 in. long, villous; bracts 2-3 lin. long, filiform; pedicels 3 1/2-7 1/2 lin. long, villous; sepals 2 1/2-3 1/2 lin. long, 1/2-3/4 lin. broad, linear or linear-lanceolate, acute, villous; corolla-lobes suberect or campanulately spreading, 5-6 1/2 lin. long, 2-3 lin. broad, oblong-lanceolate, subacute, villous on the back, the inner face hairy on the borders and bearded with long hairs at the apex, otherwise glabrous, white, tinted with purplish on the back; corona-lobes arising about 1 lin. up the staminal column, suberect or very slightly spreading, 2 1/2-3 lin. long, 1 lin. broad, broadly linear, emarginate or notched at the apex, flat, with a well marked midrib, dark purple-brown, bearing at the base 2 erect linear acute whitish lobes 1 lin. long, 1/3-2/5 lin. broad, with their tips incurved over the backs of the anther-appendages; staminal column 2 lin. long, contracted under the corona-lobes; anther-appendages much broader than long, rounded, fringed with long hairs at their tips, which are inflexed upon the truncate style-apex.

Delicate, perennial, geophytic herb, 100-250 mm high. Stems solitary, white-hairy. Leaves spreading to erect, in 2 or 3 pairs; lamina ovate to narrowly lanceolate, 25-46 x 8-25 mm. Inflorescences terminal, solitary, umbels lax, nodding, 4(-6)-flowered; pedicels and peduncle noticeably long. Flowers creamy lilac, veins purple. Corolla lobes erect, oblong-lanceolate, 7.5-12.5 x 4.5-7.0 mm; lower surface white-villous. Staminal column short, 4.2 mm high, stipitate. Corona purple-black; lobes erect, oblong, much overtopping style-stigma-apex, 5-6 mm high, ± 2.5 mm wide, apex truncate, 2 white appendages at base curving over style-stigma-head. Anther suborbicular, incumbent on style-stigma-head.
Perennial, geophytic herb, up to 250 mm high, with tuberously thickened roots. Leaves with blade narrowly ovate to elliptic, 25-60 x 4-25 mm. Flowers: in terminal, pedunculate, 4-8-flowered false umbels; corona lobes linear-oblong, purple; corolla basally fused, 10-12 mm long, with long white hairs on either side, white or purplish with greenish midrib; Nov.-Jan. Fruit a follicle.
