Perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high; rhizomatous, branched above into 2-4-headed inflorescence. Leaves alternate, mostly crowded in basal tufts; sessile; blade ovate or obovate, base dilated, roughly hairy or nearly glabrous, thin-textured, ± 5-nerved, margins entire or obscurely dentate, smaller upwards. Heads radiate in 2-4-headed panicles; peduncle remotely leafy, then bracteate, densely hairy. Involucral bracts 3-seriate, outer row smaller than 2 inner rows, outer row densely glandular and hairy. Flowers: ray florets blue, pink, mauve or magenta; disc florets yellow; Nov.-Jan. Fruit with cypsela obovate, blackish brown, shortly appressed-pubescent. Pappus bristles barbellate, of equal length, uniseriate.
