Small shrubs or annual herbs, often with resin channels. Leaves alternate, less often partially opposite or rosulate, sometimes fascicled, usually entire. Capitula usually terminal, on distinct peduncles, radiate; involucre semi-orbicular or cylindric, with the bracts 3–4-seriate, imbricate, unequal with the outer bracts smaller than the inner ones; receptacle flat to convex. Ray florets female; disc florets hermaphrodite, narrowly campanulate, 5-lobed; style-branches with triangular appendages; anthers with obtuse bases and obtusely triangular distal appendage. Achenes obovoid, flattened, with lateral ribs, often hairy, without glands, bright brown to black, with smooth or scaly epidermis; pappus of numerous hairs or bristles, uniseriate, usually equal, dentate to barbellate, persistent or deciduous.
