Perennial 500-1200(-1600) mm high; rhizomatous; leaves mainly cauline. Leaf blade 250-500 x 8-15 mm; auricles poorly developed or absent; ligule 3-8 mm long. Inflorescence open, lax, branches slender, flexuous; spikelets solitary at apices. Spikelet 7-9 mm long, 1-flowered, rachilla extension prominent, sometimes a rudimentary floret present; glumes ±equal, 1-3-nerved; lemma glabrous, scaberulous, awn 10-20 mm long; anthers 3.2-4.0 mm long.

Panicle scanty, branches delicate and flexuous with spikelets solitary at tips; spikelets 1-flowered with a prominent rhachilla extension and a rudimentary floret; glumes unequal; lemma extending into a long straight awn 10-20 mm long.
