Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Festuca

Characteristics

Weakly to densely tufted perennial, 0.25-1.00 m high, rhizomatous; old leaf sheaths brown with distinct midribs, persistent and splitting into fine fibres. Leaf blade up to 40-250 x 1.5 mm, involute, filiform, rarely expanded and folded, usually not more than half culm length; auricles absent or poorly developed (< 1 mm wide); ligule an unfringed membrane, < 1 mm long. Inflorescence an open, lax panicle, 50-200 mm long; branches bare in lower third. Spikelets 7-15 mm long, laterally compressed; glumes unequal, shorter than spikelet, 1-nerved, glabrous, scabrid on margins. Florets 4-6(-9); lemma entire, glabrous to rarely hairy, scabrid, rounded on back, at least at base, awn 1-4 mm long; anther 1-4 mm long. Flowering time Sept.-Mar.
More
Weakly to densely tufted perennial 250-1 000 mm high, rhizomatous; basal sheaths glabrous; old leaf sheaths persistent, splitting into fine fibres; ribs distinct, intercostal spaces broad, membranous, brown. Leaf blade 40-250 x to 1.5 mm, involute, filiform, folded (rarely expanded), usually not more than half the culm length; auricles absent or poorly developed; ligule shorter than 1 mm. Inªflorescence open, lax, 50-200 mm long; branches bare in lower third, smooth or with scattered prickles. Spikelet 7-15 mm long, 4-6(-9)-flowered; glumes unequal, glabrous, scabrid on margins, lower 1-nerved, upper 3-nerved; lemma glabrous to rarely hairy, scabrid, awned; awn 1-4 mm long; anthers 1-4 mm long.
Densely tufted perennial; culms 30–90 cm. high, the base clad in the fibrous remnants of old leaf-sheaths.. Leaf-blades 4–25 cm. long, mostly involute and filiform, rarely flat and up to 1.5 mm. wide, typically smooth, striate.. Panicle narrowly ovate, 5–20 cm. long, loose.. Spikelets 4–6(–9)-flowered, oblong, 10–15 mm. long, gaping; lower glume subulate to narrowly lanceolate, 3–5.5 mm. long, 1-nerved; upper glume lanceolate, 3.5–6.5 mm. long, 3-nerved; lemmas glabrous, scaberulous or rarely pubescent, the lower 5–7 mm. long, with a short awn 1–3 mm. long from the entire or obscurely bilobed tip; palea as long as the lemma, the keels scabrid; ovary hairy on the top.
Perennial; up to 1 m high; rhizomatous and densely tufted. Leaf blades 40-250 mm long; filiform; up to 1.5 mm wide; involute; folded; old leaf sheaths persisting as fine fibres; glabrous; ligule < 1 mm long; leaves usually not > 1/2 culm length. Flowers: panicle open; lax; 50-200 mm long; spikelets 7-15 mm long; spikelets 4-6(-9)-flowered; lemmas awned; awn 1-4 mm long.
Perennial, rhizomatous and tufted (densely), up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 40-250 mm long, filiform, up to 1.5 mm wide. Old leaf sheaths persisting as fine fibres; ligule shorter than 1 mm; leaves usually not more than half the culm length. Spikelets 7-15 mm long. Panicle open, lax, 50-200 mm long; spikelets 4-6(-9)-flowered; lemmas awned, awn 1-4 mm long.
Panicle 5-20 cm. long, open, rarely slightly contracted, narrowly ovate in outline, erect or somewhat drooping; branches slender but less flexuous than in the preceding sp., single or paired, simple or branched near the base.
Leaf-sheaths fairly tight, open towards the mouth, smooth; the lower persistent, splitting into brown fibres which form more or less dense cushions around the culm-bases.
Glumes unequal, chartaceous, acute; the inferior 3-5·5 mm. long, 1-nerved, narrowly lanceolate to subulate; the superior 3·5-6·5 mm. long, 3-nerved, lanceolate.
Lemmas 5-7·5 mm. long, dorsally scaberulous, sometimes thinly pubescent, lanceolate, with the apex tapering into a fine awn 1-3 mm. in length.
Leaf-laminae 3-25 x 0·05-0·2 cm., usually involute and filiform, rarely expanded, smooth, or inconspicuously scaberulous on the upper surface.
Spikelets 10-15 mm. long, 4-7(9-)-flowered, oblong, gaping, bright green or tinged with dark purple, usually erect, rarely drooping.
Culms 30-100 cm. tall, 1-2(3)-noded, erect, slender, wiry, smooth, glabrous.
Ligule very short, usually less than 1 mm. long.
A very densely caespitose perennial.
Ovary shortly pilose at the apex.
Palea with the keels scabrous.
Pedicels unequal, short.
Anthers 2·5-3 mm. long.
