Characteristics

Perennial 500-800 mm high; base sometimes swollen; rhizomatous; leaves cauline. Leaf blade 80-200 x 2-8 mm, expanded; auricles develop usually as a undulating flange with an ear-like extension on either side (this may appear absent as it breaks off easily); ligule shorter than 1 mm. Inflorescence a open panicle, to 250 mm long; branches flexuous, smooth or with scattered prickles, bare for the longest part, with 1-5 spikelets near apices; spikelets remote. Spikelet 10-12 mm long; 3-7-flowered, without rachilla extension; glumes unequal, lower 1(3)-nerved, upper 3-nerved; lemma scaberulous above, awned; awn 2-4 mm long; anthers 2.8-3.0 mm long.
