Loosely tufted perennial, with slender rhizomes; culms 1–2 m. high, robust, the nodes dark purple.. Leaf-blades 25–40 cm. long and 7–17 mm. wide, flat, coarse, without auricles; leaf-sheaths glabrous.. Panicle narrowly ovate, 20–30 cm. long, the primary branches flexuous, spreading, with the spikelets clustered towards their tips.. Spikelets 3–5-flowered, linear-oblong, 10–12 mm. long, green or purplish; lower glume 4–5.5 mm. long, the upper 5–7 mm. long; lemmas ovate-elliptic, the lower 6–8 mm. long, scabrid, awned from ± 1 mm. below the acutely bidentate hyaline tip; awn 9–15 mm. long; palea exceeding the lemma, the keels scaberulous; ovary glabrous; anthers 2–4 mm. long.
