Perennial, caespitose. Culms 53–169 cm high, sometimes branched above, scabrous. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves: basal sheath margins free; ligule 0.4–1.7 mm long (to 5.5 mm long on culm leaves where, rarely, ligule is asymmetrically developed, forming an erect lobe on one side); auricles absent; blade flat to somewhat folded, 15–49 cm long, 4.3–8 mm wide, adaxially densely scabrous on ribs. Panicles open, 14.5–29 cm long; branches rather long and often drooping. Spikelets 10–16.5 mm long, with 3–5 (–7) bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 4.3–7.7 mm long, (1) 3-nerved; upper glume 4.9–8.7 mm long. Lemma dorsally or somewhat laterally compressed, 8.5–11 mm long, acute, awnless or with a minute subapical awn not exceeding lemma apex, prominently 5-nerved, coarsely papillose to scabrous on all nerves. Caryopsis ellipsoid or obovoid.
Occurs insubalpine eucalypt woodlands, usually in association with Eucalyptus pauciflora, or on treeless plains,often amongst rocks.
