Characteristics

Perennial, stoloniferous and caespitose. Culms 29–75 cm high, smooth. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheath margins connate; culm sheath margins free or connate only at base; ligule of basal leaves 0.4–1.5 mm long; auricles absent; blade folded with margins involute, angled, ±triangular in section, filiform, 2.3–14.5 cm long, 0.4–0.7 mm diam., adaxially densely puberulous at base. Panicles usually contracted or sometimes open, 5–20 cm long. Spikelets 10.2–17 mm long, with 4–6 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 3–5.1 mm long, 1-nerved; upper glume 4.3–6 mm long. Lemma dorsally compressed, 6.4–8.5 mm long, acute, shortly awned, often pigmented, obscurely 5 or 7-nerved, papillose or minutely scabrous (particularly on midnerve); awn apical, 1–3.7 mm long. Caryopsis ellipsoid to oblong.
