Tufted perennial 300-1170 mm high, forming large tussocks; roots robust, well developed; base smooth, shiny. Leaf blade 120-240 x 3-5 mm. Inflorescence spike-like, to 80 mm long. Spikelet 5-6 mm long; glume keels sparsely hairy, long hairs at base becoming shorter upwards; lemma apex acuminate, awned; anther 1.0-1.2 mm long.
Perennial; up to 1.1 m high; rhizome robust; well developed; tufted; forming large tussocks. Leaf blades 120-240 x 3-5 mm; basal sheaths glossy. Flowers: panicle spike-like; up to 80 mm long; spikelets 5-6 mm long; glumes sparsely hairy on keels; hairs 0.5 mm long; longest hairs usually near base only; lemma apex acuminate.
