Characteristics

Perennial shrub, 0.6-2.5 m high; monoecious; copiously branching; twigs terete, conspicuously lenticellate-verrucose. Leaves firmly chartaceous to subcoriaceous, obovate, base cuneate, apex minutely apiculate, margins entire; petioles glabrous or hirtellous. Stipules lanceolate, acute to acuminate. Inflorescences at proximal axils of annual growth; bisexual or staminate cymules. Male flowers several, lateral; pedicels capillary; sepals mostly 6, outer sepal oblong, acute, scarious-margined, inner sepals obovate to suborbicular, entire; disc segments 6, thickened, roundish or elongated; stamens mostly 6, free; anthers ellipsoid. Female flowers: solitary; pedicels straight or curved; sepals same as in male; disc thick, smooth; ovary 3 carpels; styles free. Fruit a subglobose capsule, reticulate. Seeds plano-convex.
