Origin: in Geneva, N.Y., by Richard Wellington, New York State Agr. Expt. Sta. Introd. in 1934. Marshall × Howard 17; cross made in 1923; selected in 1925. Tree: very vigorous and productive; fairly resistant to verticillium wilt, powdery mildew, leaf scorch and leaf spot, but sensitive to virus diseases; runners produced freely; adapted to wide range of soil types. Fruit: large; long conic, slightly irregular; skin glossy, bright crimson, attractive; flesh light red, moderately firm, apparently too soft for shipping, very satisfactory for freezing, mildly subacid, dessert quality excellent; ripens in midseason.
