Origin: in Alnarp, Sweden, by Emil Johansson, State Hort. Res. Sta. Introd. in Sweden in 1951; in the U.S. in 1953. A pistillate variety from the U.S. called Southland (in Sweden) × Alnarp Luna; cross made in 1936; selected in 1939; tested as Alnarp 235. Tree: very vigorous, producing high yields. Indra is the name of a Hindu god in one of August Strindberg's plays. Fruit: conical; skin bright red; flesh light red, juicy, sweet, with a very pleasant flavor; ripens medium early; more suitable for dessert than for preservation; later-ripening fruit too small.
