Origin: in Jonesville, Va., by E.L. Russell. Introd. in 1940. Plant patent 345; 24 Oct. 1939; assigned to E.L. Russell. Seedling of Howard 17; discovered in 1933. Tree: large; very productive; sets many plants; resistant to drought and leaf spot; sturdy and upright stems; more productive and a little more tart than Blakemore or Howard 17. Fruit: large; flesh firm, red; ripens in midseason; good shipping quality; tends to darken color when fully ripe.
