Cultivation

Origin: in Glenn Dale, Md., by George M. Darrow, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Introd. in 1932. Portia × Euresko; cross made in 1923; selected in 1925; tested as USDA 632. Tree: productive; quite vigorous; foliage relatively susceptible to leaf scorch; flower perfect. Fruit: large to medium; long, conic to blunt conic, irregular; hull large, reflexed; skin dark red, firm; achenes yellow to red, raised above surface; flesh rich red, very firm, juicy, rarely with cavity, acid, aromatic; dessert quality very high, canning and freezing quality very good; season fairly early, before Ettersburg 121 in the Pacific Northwest, after Howard 17 in the northern states.
