Characteristics

Small spreading shrub, sometimes rooting at nodes; stems with short, spreading hairs, later glabrous. Leaves almost sessile, linear to lanceolate, 2.5–6.5 mm long, 0.5–2 mm wide; upper surface glabrous or sometimes sparsely pilose, punctate; underside puberulous; margins recurved; midrib glabrous, exposed and prominent near base; sheath ciliate. Flowers solitary or in dichasia; bracts and bracteoles similar to leaves, or bracteoles almost triangular; bracteolar sheath adnate to calyx for at least 0.5 mm, becoming leathery in fruit. Calyx 4.5–6 mm long; ribs usually glabrous; grooves puberulous, pubescent near top of bracteolar sheath. Petals 5, pink. Stamens usually 6. Style 3-branched; stigmas linear-clavate; ovules 4–6; funicle reflexed; placentation parietal. Seeds ovoid with minute papillae at one end, otherwise smooth.
