Leaves opposite, often crowded on short lateral branchlets, often encrusted or dotted with salt giving a greyish hue. Flowers each subtended by a pair of opposite bracts with a decussate pair of bracteoles; bracts and bracteoles usually similar and united by stipular sheath or bracteoles dissimilar and / or free. Calyx 4–6-lobed, the margins usually ciliate. Petals 4–6, spathulate, clawed or sometimes ribbon-like. Stamens 4–8. Ovules either basally attached on long reflexed funicles and 1 per placenta, or 1 to many on parietal placentas and then either on short upright funicles, often crowded, or some ovules on moderately long reflexed funicles.
Morphological characters and geographic distribution are the same as those of the family.
