Characteristics

Small, dense shrub, prostrate or rounded, with many short branchlets; stems densely pubescent, later glabrous. Leaves sessile, linear, 2–9 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide; upper surface usually glabrous, often shining, punctate; underside puberulous; margins recurved, almost touching; sheath ciliate only near attachment to leaf. Flowers solitary or in dichasia of few flowers. Bracts similar to leaves; bracteoles with broad 2 petioles, free from sheath. Calyx 4.5–6.5 mm long, 4-or 5-ribbed; ribs glabrous in upper portion with fine bristles near base; grooves puberulous. Petals 4, occasionally 5, c. 7–8 mm long, pink. Stamens 4, sometimes up to 6. Style 2-or 3-branched; stigmas linear to clavate; ovules 2–6, on parietal placentas; funicle refracted above.
