Characteristics

Rounded, compact, small shrub; stems setulose or pilose, later glabrous; hairs curved, rarely hooked. Leaves shortly petiolate or almost sessile, linear to ovate, 2–8 mm long, 1–4 (occasionally to 8) mm wide; base usually cordate; margins recurved; upper surface glandular and rarely sparsely pubescent; lower surface pubescent or glabrous, sometimes glaucous; midrib prominent; petiole ciliate. Flowers solitary or in much-branched dichasia; bracts and bracteoles similar to leaves; sheath adnate to calyx for at least 0.5 mm. Calyx 5.5–9.5 mm long, usually glabrous above, setulose at base woody in fruit. Petals 5 or 6, 12–16 mm long, pink. Stamens 4–6. Style branches 2–4, usually 3; stigmas linear-clavate; ovules 1–2 per parietal placenta, attached near middle of ovary wall; funicle and placenta thickened in fruit and flattened to form a false septum. Seeds papillose.
